Since finishing second in the American League East division in 2015, the New York Yankees franchise has made a few roster adjustments in the offseason. Yankees management agreed to a deal to send right-handed pitcher Adam Warren and another player to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for second baseman Starlin Castro.
Starlin Castro initially played at shortstop until the Cubs manager switched him to second base with 38 games remaining last season. Coaches in New York have stated that they intend for him to continue at second but that they would also like him to train at third base during spring training in case they need him to fill in late in the season. As the roster stands in winter 2016, the Yankees only have one player at third (Chase Headley), so developing Castro’s versatility appeals to team managers.
